SEATTLE – A HOT USA DESTINATION FOR 2017
Posted August 4th 2016 in News and Updates,
Seattle is expected to be one of the fastest growing US destinations for UK travellers in 2017 with a Virgin Atlantic direct non-stop daily flight launching March 2017 (replacing the Delta Air Lines flight), over 700 more hotel rooms in Seattle with major new hotel openings and exposure of the State through the new Twin Peaks TV series.
In the second quarter of this year, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport saw a 10% increase in the number of passengers travelling through the airport, rising to 12 million people during that period, making it busier than London Gatwick. Overall, Seattle-Tacoma’s passenger numbers have increased for 31 consecutive months.
New attractions, hotels, restaurants
The city’s most recent tourism attraction just opened – a massive 3-acre, £16 million Pavilion at the Museum of Flight. The size of two football fields, it features the world’s only full-scale NASA Space Shuttle Trainer, Air Force One, Concorde, the B-17, B-29 and B-47 bombers. Founded in 1965, The Museum of Flight is one of the largest air and space museums in the world. The collection includes more than 160 historically significant aircraft and spacecraft and even the original Boeing Company factory, called the Red Barn.
Long renowned as a world-beating centre for entrepreneurial business such as Starbucks, Boeing, Costco, Microsoft, Amazon and more, Seattle’s tourism business is also expanding. Some of the new hotels opening soon in Seattle include:
- a 245 room W Hotel,
- a 184 room SLS Hotel in a 660 foot sky-scraper downtown
- the Stadium Place Project, just north of Seattle’s CenturyLink Field, where there will be a new 282-guest room Embassy Suites Hotel – ideal for sports and cultural visitors.
These are amongst a portfolio of more than eight new hotels opening before 2018.
A large number of new restaurants are opening, including six new restaurants by celebrity chef Josh Henderson and the popularity of Seattle’s pop-up restaurants continues to grow.
70th Alaska cruise season
The 2017 Alaska cruise season will mark the 70th year of Holland America Line showing guests the marvels of Alaska and the Yukon. Holland America was the first cruise line to explore Alaska, and is still pioneering new ways for its guests to delve deeper into what it calls the Great Land.
Seattle ranks amongst the top 20 U.S. cities in July’s Travel and Leisure 2016 World’s Best Awards with its nearby San Juan Islands in the top 5 Best Islands in the Continental U.S.
Washington State is in the Pacific Northwest where Seattle crowns the state and regular cruises head to Alaska. Seattle is a city where art and nature meet, and foodie’s fantasies come true. The ocean backcloth is the Olympic Peninsula, mountains and beautiful islands where whale watching, boating and kayaking experiences await. Washington State has three national parks (Mt. Rainier / Olympic / North Cascades), mountain ranges, volcanoes and rainforests of bearded mossy, massive girthed trees. This year, Washington’s burgeoning wine industry has blossomed to over 900 wineries. It’s a state of spectacular contrasts, superb for fly-drive holidays, with a choice of direct non-stop daily flights into Seattle’s SeaTac International Airport.
